Customer Reviews

An amazing follow-up in an innovative series!

5.0 / 5.0

If you're looking for an innovative game that's both fun AND challenging, look no further than Under The Knife 2 (UTK2) for the DS. This is the type of game that makes the DS shine! Who knew that saving lives in video games could be so fun? But, don't confuse UTK2 with Operation- this is no board game! There is something thrilling about using your stylus as a scalpel, laser, and sutures (amongst other medical tools) in order to save people who've been in car accidents, police officers who've been shot, and those afflicted with new strains of GUILT (a disease created by medical terrorists in UTK1).

There have been some definite improvements in this sequel, not only with a look and feel adopted from the Wii, but with even more satisfying and responsive stylus controls than the original! Also new are three difficulty settings, which come as a relief to those who've experienced hair loss from some of the insanely difficult levels in UTK1! A nice touch is your ability to change the difficulty setting back and forth throughout the story, so if you're stuck on one surgery, you can change the setting, complete the level, and then change the setting back for the next round!

While you don't need to be familiar with the first Trauma Center DS game, it certainly helps, as this is a true sequel (taking place several years after the events of the first game). The story, which is completely text-based a la Ace Attorney (aside from the odd voice-over) is quite engrossing and suspenseful. UTK2 also has quite a bit more replayability as you hone your surgical skills for better scores in each difficulty setting, and like UTK1, after you complete the game, you are rewarded with bonus surgeries that are extremely difficult, if not impossible.

If I had one complaint about UTK2, it's that I wish there were more standard operations that involved REAL medical problems. I mean, battling freaky diseases brought on by medical terrorism is fun and challenging, but part of me longs for another satisfying bone re-construction or appendix removal. I would love to see UTK3 take place in an actual hospital O.R., featuring a wide variety of patients with some humorous but real medical emergencies! I mean, I'm sure the average surgeon would have some weirdly amusing stories to tell- oh what a game that would be!

Idolatry

McZargald of CATpit construction has posted a couple of really great Vic Viper fighters for NoVVember. The stripey one above is called Moorish Idol after a fish. It doesn’t have the traditional pronged front of a Vic Viper, but I think it’s way cool. Crusade is equally stripey, with nicely sloped jet intakes:
