Customer Reviews
Great game. Don't let the controls scare you.

This game ise a follow up of the first Silent Hill and it will answer MOST of the burning questions you have about the game. The story is great and features plenty of plot twists. As for the game itself... it's scary... play this in the dark if you're brave. You'll be making your way through som truely disturbing moments, things that you might only see in a nightmare of your own. It's that scary. The controls... people have alot of bad things to say about the controls, but honestly, they're a hell of alot better then Resident Evil's ever was. That's all you need to know right? Besides, the game isn't about pulling off fancy moves, it's about making you shake in a pool of your own fear sweat. And that's exactly what this game WILL do.
If you don't get scared, and i'm being 100% serious about this, you should go see a docter or something, because you obviously are way to desensitized.
They're Back

First off, let me warn you that reading some of these reviews gave away the ending (::glare::), so I would be careful which you read if you haven't finished the game.
I'll keep this short and simple. You can get the detailed description from another review below, I'm sure. In short, we return to Silent Hill with a character named Heather, a 17 year old girl who flashes between the hellish nightmare of a world and the "normal" Silent Hill. The monsters are back, and for me, more terrifying than ever.
There are slow monsters you will want to outrun, and fast monsters you will have to stay and fight. Something I love about this game is it's ability to lower the action or riddle setting. I have my action setting on easy because I'm not so good with a gun =), but I have my puzzles on hard so it can still be fun for me. It's made to be adjustable to fit every person.
I bought the second Silent Hill 2 when I bought my PS2, and I didn't enjoy it at all. But once I started playing this one, I really got into it, and thus got into the second one. I haven't played the first yet, since it's difficult to find (I plan on buying it on ebay), but from what I've read the first is the best. This is not to say that this game doesn't stand on it's own and is enjoyable in it's own ways.
Heather has many dark secrets, and some of them may surprise you. If you're a fan of the series, defiantly buy this game. If you've never played a Silent Hill game- rent it first. I warn you that it can be very, very scary and gruesome. I don't normally enjoy gory games/movies, but this one had thrills of it's own, playing with music and lighting.
Overall, I highly reccomend this game. It is not only fun to play, but enjoyable to watch. You will dread the next corner, but will be too intrigued to turn back. Welcome back to Silent Hill...
great game in a great series.

ritual abuse, guilt, greif, loss, pesona, morality, theology, fear lurking in the commonplace just beyond our senses, these are some of the issues that have come up in the silent hill series... it's obvious to me that video games are growing up... when you can tackle issues like dealing with the loss of a terminally ill loved one with a straight face in a game... wow... these games are creepy, surreal, and really produce a sensation thats pretty rare in any medium and thats some jump-up-in-your-seat fear. there are times when it's like watching a car wreck... you feel like it's a little to scarry but you want to find out what happens next... buckets and buckets of blood. but beyond that silent hill was first celebrated as a "cinematic" game and while some people are critical of the gameplay (it's essentially an old school adventure game where you solve puzzles to get to the next part of the story.) if you give them a chance they are very immersive. the people behind silent hill didn't leave it devoid of story, and even beyond story theres allegory and metaphor... theres some depth beyond killing and gore. certainly not for everyone...
i was totaly engrossed for three or four days and just finished silent hill 3 last night... theres a point in the game when the sleazy charachter (vincent) is berating your charachter (heather)... "don't look so smug your the worst person in here." he accuses her of enjoying all the killing shes been doing in the game "you get exited when you club them to death and hear their screams." (these aren't exact quotes) anyway he's chiding you for doing what you had to do to get to this point in the game... what you have to do in alot of games... kill stuff... heather tries to defend her actions by saying they were only monsters... "oh, is that what they looked like to you?" says vincent... the monsters are interchangeable, robots, enemy soldiers, it's virtual killing and we get exited...
this is a strange meta-meta thing and seems very tongue and cheek and self aware for a video game... also theres the part where your in a house of horrors in an amusement park... your in a house of horrors in a horror video game... essentialy what the game itself is... you go from room to room, from scare to scare, although theres an appearance of freedom your really confined by the items and thier functions and their interaction with certain other items... find the key, open the door, another scare.
also the importance of sound as a tool of immersion and fear is incredibly well implemented... this goes for all of the games... i remember in the first game there was a door that led into and empty room and then suddenly theres an abrupt loud and freaky sound that bleaches your skin... nothing happened... you walked into an empty room... but the sound made it significant... theres alot of throbbing gristle style background noises that give different enviroments the tension they need to be frightening... sound holds the whole enviroment together.
to be honest there was some content that was hard to follow even if you had played the other two games. they did a pretty good job of tying it up in the end so that you wouldn't feel so lost but even some of the dialogue is very confusing.
also i felt that some of the grit grom the earlier games is sort of going away. in earlier games you found weapons that related to your surroundings or that you could imagine finding in the toolshed.. hammer, crowbar, board with nail in it, kitchen knife. in this game she finds a machine gun on the floor. not very beleivable but whatever it IS a videogame. the monsters are alright exept for the numb bodies and the flying pendulums, they don't really seem to fit in. and they're the same monsters over and over which i guess is much like the old formula.
i get frustrated with these games but there are enough moments unlike any other that make me say this is the best game i've ever played... they have the crapiest controlls and a linear storyline but i can't get enough... i can't wait to see the next one which apparently primarily takes place in a single room.
Silent Hill 3

SH3 is about a 17 yr old girl named Heather who was shopping at a mall. She is being followed by a strange man who says he is a detective, so she ducks into a bathroom. Upon escaping into the mall she was shopping in earlier, she also stumbles upon Silent Hill. I have not yet finished this game because it is so scary. It is very fun and hard. You meet characters like Douglas and Claudia. Claudia is the daughter of Dahlia (from SH1). I recommend this game to anyone who can take it.
Good, not as good as 1 & 2, but good.

I have played SH2 and 3, and read up on 1. I hear the first is the best, only with obsolete graphics. I liked this game fine; it was a bit scary and fairly entertaining. This has the best graphics so far, but that's not all there is to a game. The new monsters aren't very scary looking at all, but they do have strengths and weaknesses to keep a variety in fighting them. For example, the Mandarin is big and slow, but does a fair amount of damage and takes more hits to kill. The double-headed dog thing is fast and tough to hit unless you shoot it, but it does less damage. Each monster gives some of a challenge, and you may dread hearing the radio squeal because of it. The bosses were not very challenging for being the big battles of the game. They didn't have any weaknesses or anything like that; you just dodge and shoot. A few of them are a giant worm and a guy with big knives for arms. Oooh, that's almost as creepy as the Teletubbies. A few of the monsters are somewhat scary, however, such as the nurse. I guess because it was once human, or because it is fairly powerful and may wield a gun. I was worried every time the radio went off and hid in a corner with my gun until the creature came to me, but I am something of a chicken... The music in this game is enjoyable; I especially like the song at the beginning. I actually listen to it outside of the game. There is a CD with music on it that comes with the game, most of it is music without much lyrics or just gibberish, but it's more than you normally get. The music adds a good effect during cut scenes and when you're in a scary room. Some of it sounds like monsters or screaming. There are nice little touches in the game, such as the connection to the first and second games. The plot is based partly on the first game and there are posters and conversations between Heather and herself that refer to SH2. Also, you get special weapons for playing through the game once or twice, for example, the beam sabre (for fans of melee weapons) and the flamethrower (for playing through the game 3 times, I believe). I am currently playing the second time for things I missed, such as the katana (an efficient Japanese blade) and I want to get the flamethrower near the beginning in my third play through. The extra weapons are fun, but they deduct from your total points at the end if you use them. There are also ways to make the game easier, especially for playing multiple times. If you die 3 times (?) then you can have a beginner mode, which is quite easy. You can also increase ammo yield from each box (x2, x3, etc.), after playing through. The documents you read during the game are usually interesting, with hints or dark tales. The characters are not very interesting, with Heather yelling at random people instead of getting help from them, and Claudia repeating things and making no sense. But the plot does get revealed, and it is fun along the way. This series is great; it has hidden meanings and disturbing stories. This game lives up to that, if not completely. The controls are pretty much the same as SH2, and can be a little difficult. But you can change between 2D and 3D controls. If in doubt, rent this game. But I was happy with owning it. And get the other two games if you can. By the way, I had this up as anonymous, but I decided to put it up under my name.
