Description
Looking for a new obsession to keep you up nights? Let me introduce you to Hotsuma, the main character in Shinobi, the much anticipated new action-adventure game from Sega. Fans of the original 2-D game have been waiting seven years for the next installment, and won't be disappointed by this energetic 3-D game for PS2.
The premise hasn't changed much--kill bad guys, kill more bad guys, kill a boss, move on to the next level. You, Hotsuma, are the leader of the Oboro clan. As your clansmen are destroyed, you set out to avenge their deaths by slashing hellspawn and enemy ninjas to death with your powerful sword, Akujiki. As you move through game levels, Akujiki comes alive with power, absorbing the souls of those you kill--and turning against you if you don't keep him well fed. The basic moves--run, jump, slash--are easy to learn, but with each level you must master difficult combos to defeat trickier enemies. Moving quickly and attacking instinctively is essential to killing fast and furiously--each kill gives your sword more power, while each moment of hesitation makes your weapon impatient for blood.
Shinobi, at heart, is a souped-up arcade game with awesome graphics. The anime-style cutscenes woven around the slice-and-dice sequences provide an interesting story, but one that doesn't relate very directly with your job on the streets of postapocalyptic Tokyo. Your moves are cool though--spinning in midair to collect coins that will unlock secret levels, killing three ninjas with a flash of Akujiki, zipping around so fast that a shadow of your ghost remains. It's easy to get caught up in the exhilarating energy of the game. Serious gamers will enjoy confronting bosses, who may take several frustrating tries to kill. But when you finally defeat them, you will feel the power of centuries of samurai. --Maile Bohlmann

Sega What happened to Yuzo Koshiro ?

Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 are Masterpieces. This game is far from that. Difficulty is not based on skill but rather on how long will u play before u smash the controller over your head. I played this game until the last boss with the strategy guide. I could not beat the last boss, this is actually only the second time I have not been able to finish a game in my life.
Yuzo Koshiro synonymies with Streets Of Rage and Shinobi, made some of the best 16-bit Music. Why did Sega abandon this guy?
It's worth checking out if u are a fan of the original Shinobi, but this is not Joe Musashi.
What happened to killing enemy with shrunken, in this game your shrukens are good for nothing. Also blocking has seemed to have disappeared. That's what really frustrated me about this game there were little things that could have been tweaked.
Overall it's still a good action game but not up to par with the rest of the series.
Wow

Well, at first I would have given this game a 4 instead of my final rating but I find that the game is both unique and challenging which is always what made Shinobi so fun and addicting. This game also requires ALOT of time to master. The game isnt a "wow look at all the great environments, I think I'll explore!"...its an action game simple and true. Its stripped down and pumped full of mind blowing action. You'll need to learn the controls and moves to accomplish beating this wonderfully amazing game that both challenges you and amazes you after youve pulled off a 'tate'. A tate is a combo of moves that feed your sword. Your sword if not used properly will eat away at your health! yes VERY challenging! This game isnt for the impatient gamer or the new comer, its for the veteran gamers that remember HARD games of days long gone!
Sega's long awaited sequel to the Shinobi series

The Shinobi series has been in existence since Sega's Master System debut in the 80's. This PS2 update includes everything that made Shinobi memorable for long-time Sega fans, only this time with 3D graphics and gameplay. Although slightly hampered by repetitive backrounds, the visuals are crisp and colorful, and the techno-esqe soundtrack provides a nice mood to the modern day Japan setting. Aside from the usual dashing, shuriken throwing, and wall running ninja tricks, the heart of the gameplay here is to use the Akujiki (a sword that feeds on souls) to demolish multiple enemies and build up "tate" combos...or else your energy will degenerate. The fault to this system is that the player is often forced to rush through levels with little time to admire the backrounds or search for secrets. Furthermore, some of the later bosses in the game require you to take out several of their minions before attacking them in order to do any damage at all. This makes the game more frustrating than it should be in some cases, so don't expect an easy ride here (especially if you plan on unlocking all of the secrets). Despite it's steep difficulty, Shinobi remains one of the all around best action games for PS2...so pick it up if you feel up to the challenge.
none

ok lets get started.here r some cons.this game is freaken hard.if ur good at video games then u might be able to beat this hard 1200 level game.its fun if ur any good.the game starts mediam then if u beat it u can play it on hard if u beat hard u get extremly hard if u beat that u get easy.easy is like u against 36 bots on god like in the game "unreal tournement" thats just how hard this game is.here r some pros.its got great but hard gameplay and if u kill all the enemies in a ariea in a serten amount of time u get a cool cut seen.ya thats about all the pros i can think of but when i say the game play is good i mean it and the gameplay over powers every con u can think of.and thats my review.
Long time Shinobi fan dissapointed...

From a long time Shinobi fan, I am very dissapointed in this game. Its a pure action game with some cut scenes to highlight the hacking and slashing you will do throughout. Combos are intresting way to rack up points and power up your sword, but when you fight so many enemies at once and they block all frontal attacks, its gets very annoying. You end up jumping/dashing around everyone to try and get behind them but then the camera only does an adaquate job of keeping up and you lose half the enemies behind it - meaning attacks from the side you can't see.
Graphics are pretty nice for the PS2, but its definetly showing its age. The textures do get pretty bland and unimaginative though. Running through a city with pale purple neon lights and almost non-existant signs or moonlight or interactable objects besides a few boxes and vending machines is boring.
Sound is average, no tunes stick out in my head and I usually forget its even playing after ahwile.
Story is medicore at best - not really even worth mentioning.
Controls get the job done.
Even though I own all the other shinobi games on home consoles, I would have to recommend this as a rental. Go pick up one of the genesis titles for some better platforming action.
